To make a rigid wall of brick, individual bricks are laid together in horizontal layers, or coarses. The bricks are bound together by cementing material or mortar.
The mason spread a layer of mortar with a wide, flat trowel. He then sets the bricks on the mortar pressing them down lightly. If bricks is out of line, he taps gently into place with the handle of his trowel.
